The Story behind HSC’s annual Amaryllis Campaign

June 22, 2017

Betty Philip

The 2017 Amaryllis Campaign is in full swing now with over half the bulbs already sold. Ever wonder how it all started? Here’s the story behind the annual fundraiser which has raised over $5 million since inception:

In 1984, Newfoundland’s St. John’s Chapter came up with the fundraising idea of selling Paper White flowers in an effort to spread awareness and raise funds in support of individuals and families impacted by Huntington disease (HD). The fundraiser was a huge success with the Chapter selling 5,000 kits and raising over $10,000 for HD research and services.

With the success and enthusiasm around this event, this fundraiser became a national event in 1985, giving supporters from all across the country the chance to participate. Amaryllis was chosen as the signature flower for this campaign since it most resembled the Society’s logo.

Since then, gorgeous amaryllis bloom from coast to coast across Canada, inspiring hope of a world free from HD. Every Amaryllis bulb blooming in someone’s home or business holds the promise of a world free from HD.

In its 33rd year, the 2017 Amaryllis Campaign promises to be as rewarding as the very first year, thanks to our incredible volunteer sellers. Each kit we sell brings us one step closer to finding meaningful treatment for HD. Priced at $15.00, the kit includes one high quality bulb, growing instructions, soil, pot and saucer.

As you prepare for this year’s campaign, here are some great tips from our best sellers:

  • Word-of-mouth proves to be the best form of advertising. Spread the word to your family, friends, colleagues and neighbors who may be able to help you sell more bulbs. Posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest etc. are great ways to reach your circles.
  • Posters are available which can be displayed in stores, banks, libraries, local businesses, community centers or even in your apartment’s notice board. Contact Jeff at 1-800-998-7398 or email us at amaryllis@huntingtonsociety.ca to receive yours.
  • Newspapers, radio and T.V. channels offer opportunities for charitable organizations to build public awareness in the community. Contact your local media channel to advertise sales of these gorgeous blooms in support of the HD community.
  • Set up a table at the local farmers market or at your neighborhood’s family event to raise awareness  and sell the bulbs
