Symptoms

HD affects a person’s physical, thinking, and emotional abilities.

Every person living with HD will experience symptoms and progress in a different way. Signs and symptoms usually appear between the ages of 35 to 55.

Physical Symptoms

Physical symptoms involve movement. A person with HD might have problems walking, talking and swallowing. Impaired coordination could make them look clumsy, or like they are drunk. They might make involuntary dance-like movements called chorea.

Mental or Cognitive Symptoms

Mental or cognitive symptoms relate to thinking. Examples include difficulty with focus, planning, recall of information, and making decisions.

Emotional or Psychiatric Symptoms

Emotional or psychiatric symptoms can be thought of as how the person feels and behaves. They include depression, apathy, irritability, anxiety, and obsessive behaviour.
