HSC HIRES NEW FAMILY SERVICES TEAM MEMBERS

RESOURCE CENTRE DIRECTOR FOR SOUTHERN ALBERTA (CALGARY)

The Huntington Society of Canada (HSC) is pleased to announce that Shelley Thiele is the new Resource Centre Director for Southern Alberta, based in the Calgary area. Shelley completed her education in South Africa and has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work. Shelley’s skills and experience include supporting individuals and their families in adjusting to the changes and losses through the early, intermediate and advanced stages of a progressive autoimmune disease. Over the last 12 years in Alberta, she has worked as a leader in a non-profit, where children, youth and families were involved with the health, education, employment, immigration, child welfare and justice systems. Her most recent position was with a program serving Indigenous families involved with Children’s Services.

Starting on Monday, January 7, 2019, Shelley will begin her orientation process and will be working 25 hours per week to provide support, education and advocacy to individuals and families affected by HD. Shelley will be providing outreach services through visits in southern Alberta, facilitating support groups, providing support at clinic visits as well as being available through phone and email.

FAMILY SERVICES INCLUDES:

  • Direct support services to all persons affected by HD: individuals with HD, caregivers, people at-risk, people who are gene positive or gene negative, family members, friends
  • Information on HD and strategies for care
  • Connecting families with community services/resources through referral and advocacy
  • Educational sessions to community groups and healthcare professionals
