Centres for HD CARE

(Clinical and Research Excellence)

THe Challenge:

  • Huntington disease requires coordinated care from multiple healthcare professionals, yet access to specialized HD services remains inconsistent across Canada.
  • Numerous individuals and families must travel hours to access specialized care, while support in rural, remote and northern communities remains limited.
  • Many Canadian clinics lack the infrastructure required to participate in clinical trials, limiting access to host clinical trials and emerging therapies.

The Solution:

The Centres for HD CARE (Clinical and Research Excellence) is HSC’s national strategy to transform specialized Huntington disease care in Canada. 

  • The initiative will establish a standardized framework for specialized HD clinics, helping centres across the country deliver coordinated, evidence-based care aligned with international best practices.
  • It will bring healthcare professionals together around a shared approach to HD treatment and management, strengthen clinical expertise and improve coordination for individuals and families.

The Centres for HD CARE will also help address some of the biggest gaps in the current system. 

  • The framework will support clinics in becoming trial-ready, opening the door to greater participation in clinical research and future therapies.
  • It will strengthen capacity in underserved communities and help build a more connected national network of HD care.

The goal is transformative: to move Canada toward a system where access to high-quality, specialized HD care does not depend on a person’s postal code.
