At the Huntington Society of Canada (HSC), we recognize the importance of privacy and are committed to maintaining the accuracy, confidentiality, and security of your personal information. The Huntington Society of Canada has assigned responsibility for privacy oversight to a member of its senior leadership team and has privacy policies and procedures in place. Individuals may contact us with questions or concerns about our privacy practices using the contact information provided below.

By providing personal information to HSC, you consent to our collection, use, and disclosure of your information as described in this policy, except where otherwise permitted or required by law.

Third-Party Service Providers

We may share personal information with trusted third-party service providers who support our operations. These may include:

  • Payment processors and financial institutions
  • Fundraising and event platforms
  • Information technology and cloud service providers
  • Email and communications platforms
  • Mailing and printing vendors
  • Professional advisors such as legal and accounting services
 

These service providers are required to protect your personal information and use it only for the purposes for which it was shared.

STORAGE OF INFORMATION

While we make reasonable efforts to store personal information in Canada, we may use third-party service providers, including cloud-based services, to store and process personal information on our behalf. Some of these service providers may be located outside of Canada.

As a result, personal information may be transferred to, stored, or accessed in jurisdictions outside of Canada and may be subject to the laws of those jurisdictions, including access by courts, law enforcement, and national security authorities.

We take reasonable steps to ensure that personal information is protected and handled in accordance with applicable privacy laws and this policy, including when it is processed by third-party service providers.

DONOR LISTS AND INFORMATION SHARING

The Huntington Society of Canada does not sell its donor or mailing lists.

We do not currently rent, exchange, or otherwise share donor lists with other organizations. If this practice were to change in the future, we would do so only in accordance with applicable laws and in compliance with the Canadian Marketing Association Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

In all cases, we honour donors’ requests to limit or exclude the use of their personal information for communications or fundraising purposes. Individuals may contact us using the information provided below to update their preferences.

Limitation de la collecte

The information HSC collects is the minimum amount we need to establish and maintain a service, volunteer, participant, donor or program relationship with you. This includes but is not limited to

  • Contact and identification information, such as your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address
  • Donation information such as date of gift, amount of gift, the campaign you contributed to, name of spouse or partner if it was a joint gift
  • Financial information such as your payment methods and preferences, billing and banking information (credit card number and expiry date or chequing account transit numbers, in order to process your donation); for online financial transactions such as donations and event registrations, we process standard credit card information (card number, card type and expiration date) via a secure, 128-bit encrypted Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) session. SSL is the proven standard for secure web transactions.  All online transactions are processed by an accredited third-party vendor who meets all of the required online security requirements.

Access to personal information is limited to employees, volunteers, and authorized service providers who require it to fulfill their responsibilities. Any third-party service providers are required to protect personal information and use it only for the purposes for which it was shared.

We may use or disclose personal information without consent where permitted or required by law, including in response to legal or regulatory requirements.

HSC retains personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected and to meet legal and regulatory requirements.

Services à la famille

The following applies specifically to personal information collected through our Family Services Program:

La Société Huntington du Canada est un réseau national de professionnels et de bénévoles travaillant à améliorer la qualité de vie des personnes atteintes de la maladie de Huntington (MH) et de leurs familles, et à trouver de nouveaux traitements fiables pour la MH.

Le Programme des services aux familles a été créé pour fournir un soutien direct aux personnes et aux familles qui vivent avec la DH. La DH étant une maladie génétiquement héréditaire, les clients sont des personnes atteintes de DH et des membres de leur famille, en plus de la communauté en général. Les Services aux familles au sein du HSC s'efforcent de répondre au statut bio-psycho-social du client, ainsi qu'au système social dans lequel il vit. Ceci est accompli en maintenant une relation “thérapeutique” avec le client, en se connectant avec d'autres professionnels, en développant des soutiens et des services dans la communauté et en fournissant une éducation continue.

Les objectifs du programme sont de :

  1. Permettre aux individus et aux familles de s'adapter émotionnellement et pratiquement en fournissant des informations et en les aidant à gérer le présent et à se préparer pour l'avenir.
  2. Aider les familles à identifier et à comprendre leurs besoins en services spécifiques, leur permettre d'accéder à ces services en temps voulu, puis assurer le suivi pour garantir que les besoins du client sont satisfaits.
  3. Créer des systèmes de soutien mutuel pour les individus et les familles afin de réduire l'isolement et de tirer des leçons de l'expérience personnelle.
  4. Veiller à ce que les familles atteintes de la maladie de Huntington reçoivent un continuum de services en plaidant pour le développement de nouveaux services conçus pour répondre aux besoins des personnes et des familles. Veiller également à ce que les services existants soient adaptés pour inclure les familles vivant avec la maladie de Huntington et pour bien les servir.
  5. Support and educate service providers to better serve individuals and families living with HD.
 

Pour atteindre ces objectifs, les employés du programme des services familiaux devront recueillir des renseignements personnels qui nous aideront à mieux vous servir. Confidentialité

Il y a des limites à la confidentialité.

  1. Child Protection: When a staff becomes aware of harm, or potential harm to a child, we are required by law to report this to the local children’s services as indicated by provincial legislation.
  2. Harm to Self: Professional Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice which govern staff in the Family Services Program mean that it may not be possible to maintain confidentiality when we become aware of an individual who is intending to do harm to self.
  3. Harm to Others: Professional Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice which govern staff in the Family Services Program mean that we cannot ensure confidentiality in situations when we learn of harm or potential harm to another adult.
  4. Testimony in Court: There may be times when staff of the Family Services Program are required to disclose information as part of legal proceedings, in accordance with applicable laws.
