National Advocacy Efforts

We support anyone affected by Huntington disease, whether you are at-risk, gene-positive, gene-negative, living with HD, a carer, a spouse, a family member, and/or a healthcare or community care worker.

Direct Support Services

  • Information and Education – Learn about the nature and progression of HD, along with practical care strategies.
  • Short-term Counseling – Access support to navigate emotional and practical adjustments to living with HD.
  • Resource Counseling and Referral – Get guidance on community resources tailored to individual needs.
  • Individual Advocacy – Receive support in working with service providers and individuals to ensure access to necessary services.
  • Mutual Support – Connect with others through opportunities such as support groups for individuals with HD and their families.
  • Partnerships – The Family Services team works in partnership with local HD Clinics, Movement Disorder Clinics, and Genetics Clinics to enhance service delivery.

Education and Support

Health, social service, and community professionals play an important role in supporting individuals and families affected by HD. To assist them in this work, education and support are available for:

  • Staff in hospitals, mental health centres, and long-term care facilities
  • Home care, counsellors, physicians, and other health and related providers
  • Community support groups and agencies
  • Community workers such as lawyers, police, and justice system staff

Available resources include:

  • Information and education
  • Individual consultation
  • Connections to other professionals

Community Development

  • Foster an awareness and understanding of Huntington disease
  • Liaise with other professionals and organizations to improve the services
  • Collaborate with other service providers and government to expand existing services
  • Develop new services

National Advocacy

The Family Services team supports HSC’s participation in activities that focus on systemic change to enhance the social, political, and environmental conditions that contribute to the well-being of individuals with HD and their families. To learn more about our advocacy efforts please click here.
